Also, according to the .bom, the update only replaces 
/usr/lib/libssl.0.9.dylib and not other installed parts of OpenSSL.

Most notably, "/usr/bin/openssl version" still returns "OpenSSL 
0.9.6b 9 Jul 2001", which won't inspire confidence in anyone seeking 
to verify a successful update.
